Life and register readings
Mahmud Hilmi Efendi was born in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1856/57 (AH 1273). Work began in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 27. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Mahmud Hilmi in Istanbul as Rüsumat Nezareti Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı. At the same time, from 1883 to 1895, the lists also place Mahmud Hilmi in a post with no place named as Rüsumat idaresi kâtibi, with a rise to customs official (Rüsumat Memuru) in 1893/94. Alongside, the lists for 1894/95 give a second post, in Kozlu as Rüsumat Memuru.
