Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the İslam community, Mehmed Mecdi Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). The personnel record dates the first work to 1862/63, after the first annual entry. The first annual entry, for 1691/92, names Mehmed Mecdi as birinci hukuk da'ireleri riyâseti, with no place. For 1692 to 1862, 1863 to 1868, 1882 to 1887, 1888 to 1891, 1892 to 1896 and 1901 to 1907 the lists have no entry. No other of the 8,239 officials has entries spanning 223 years.
Pay rose from 3,500 kuruş a month in 1691/92 to a peak of 10,000 in 1907/08, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less.
