Life and register readings
The life of Yusuf Ağa began in Damascus (Şam) in 1848/49 (AH 1265); the father's occupation was "Kürd aşireti şeyhi". At about 27, in 1876/77, Yusuf began work, on a first salary of 139 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, names Yusuf as Jandarma Alayı Nişancı Taburu 4. Bölük Süvari Zabtiye 6. Onbaşısı, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1889 to 1891. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1888/89.
