Life and register readings
Born in Bihke Kasabası (Bosna) in 1857/58 (AH 1274), İbrahim Ethem Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). At about 15, in 1872/73, İbrahim Ethem began work. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with İbrahim Ethem as Rüsûmat İdaresi mülazımı in Bihać (Bihke), where the entries run to 1874/75. Alongside, the lists for 1874 to 1890 give a second post, in a post with no place named as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru). For 1878 to 1880 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1889 to 1892 give a second post, in Biga as Düyûn-ı Umûmiye memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1891 to 1893 give a second post, in Hersek as Düyûn-ı Umûmiye memuru. The lists have no entry for 1893 to 1895. The last post was in Bilecik in 1898/99.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to 400 in 1895/96, the peak, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 350 kuruş.
