Life and register readings
Mehmed Şakir Efendi was born in Antakya in 1836/37 (AH 1252), into the İslam community, and the father's occupation was "Cami-i Kebir imamı ve hatibi". Work began in Antakya in 1864/65, at about 28, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Mehmed Şakir in Antakya, the birthplace, as Tahrir Fırkası Muharrir-i Sanisi. Next came Aleppo in 1865/66. Alongside, the lists for 1865 to 1867 give a second post, in Ankara as Tahrir Fırkası Muharrir-i Evveli. Mehmed Şakir then moved to Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) from 1872 to 1878. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1879 give a second post, in Diyarbakır as İkinci Fırka Muharriri. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Şakir to Mosul (Musul) and Kirkuk (Kerkük) from 1879 to 1897.
