Life and register readings
Mehmed Sadık Efendi was born in Mecca (Mekke) in 1870/71 (AH 1287); the father's occupation was "Hicaz Vilayeti Meclis-i İdaresi başkâtip muavini". Work began in Jeddah (Cidde) in 1880/81, at about 11. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 11 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Mehmed Sadık as Cidde Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı in Jeddah, where the entries run to 1883/84. At the same time, from 1883 to 1907, the lists also place Mehmed Sadık in a post with no place named as Hicaz Vilayeti Muhasebe Kalemi görevlisi. For 1899 to 1901 the lists have no entry.
The salary went from 30 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 350 in 1906/07, the peak, when 37 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 46,320 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
