Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1832/33 (AH 1248), Muhiddin Bey came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Evkaf baş katibi". At about 17, in 1849/50, Muhiddin began work. The first annual entry, for 1849/50, names Muhiddin in the mülâzemetle Hüdâvendigâr vilâyet-i celilesi muhâsebe kalemi, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1854 to 1857 and 1879 to 1882. Alongside, the lists for 1867/68 give a second post, in İnegöl as İnegöl kazasının aşar-ı ahalisine me’mur muavini (ilâveten). Muhiddin then moved to Uşak in 1889/90. The last entries, from 1890 to 1892, name Muhiddin as Kütahya ve Karahisar-ı sahib sancakları palamut aşar nezareti, with no place. In place of a title the lists give Aciga Cikarildi for 1883/84 and Mazuliyet for 1892/93. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 45 years or more.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1853/54 to a peak of 2,500 in 1890/91, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 310,800 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned. The peak was 50 times the first salary, a rise matched by fewer than 4 per cent of the 2,724 officials paid for ten years or more. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
