Osman Nuri Efendi

Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1863/64 (AH 1280); the father's occupation was "Emekli Asâkir-i şâhâne yüzbaşısı". Work began in Nazımiye (Kızılkilise) in 1880/81, at about 17, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Osman Nuri as Tahrirat kâtibi in Nazımiye. Alongside, the lists for 1881 to 1895 give a second post, in Çemişgezek as Rüsum-ı senedat memuru. At the same time, from 1894 to 1902, the lists also place Osman Nuri in Cebeli bereket as Defter-i hâkânî kalemi başkâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1901/02 give a second post, in a post with no place named as İzin. Alongside, the lists for 1901 to 1908 give a second post, in Latakia as Defter-i hâkânî kalemi başkâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1907/08 give a second post, in Ergani as Defter-i hâkânî memuru. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1881/82 and 1909/10; İstifa (resignation) for 1883/84 and 1901/02; Azil (dismissal) for 1894/95.

Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 800 in 1907/08, in Ergani, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 38,760 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
