Life and register readings
Mehmed Efendi was born in Malatya in 1835/36 (AH 1251). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). At about 48, in 1882/83, Mehmed began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 280 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 1 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 48 or older. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, names Mehmed as Tulumba Müdür Muavini, with no place.
