Life and register readings
Born in Kilis in 1845/46 (AH 1262), Mehmed Hamdî Efendi was the child of a cavalryman holding a fief (sipahi). Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1863/64, at about 17. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Mehmed Hamdî as Zaptiye kalemi mülazımı in Aleppo, where the entries run to 1868/69. The lists have no entry for 1864 to 1866. Alongside, the lists for 1868 to 1873 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Vukuat kâtibi. At the same time, from 1872/73, the lists also place Mehmed Hamdî in Mersin as Seyyar fırka tahrir memuru. The last posts were in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) from 1874 to 1882.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 1,185 in 1872/73, in Mersin, when four in five paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 475 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1881/82.
