Life and register readings
Mehmet Hayrullah Efendi was born in Bosna in 1861/62 (AH 1278); the father's occupation was "Hersek sancağı tüccar kâtibi". At about 36, in 1897/98, Mehmet Hayrullah began work in Izmir (İzmir), on a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 36 or older. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Mehmet Hayrullah as Polis mülazımı in Izmir. Alongside, the lists for 1897 to 1901 give a second post, in Bozdoğan as Bidayet mahkemesi sorgu muavini. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1897/98 and Infisal for 1899/1900.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 360 in 1900/01, in Bozdoğan, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
