Life and register readings
Vasil Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Hristiyan community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Hama in 1894/95, at about 25, on a first salary of 600 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Vasil as Belediye eczacısı in Hama, where the entries run to 1896/97. Alongside, the lists for 1896/97 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Hapishane-i Umumi ikinci eczacısı.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1894/95, in Hama, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
