Life and register readings

Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Katolik community, Zeki Meğamis Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Zeki Meğamis began work in Istanbul in 1899/1900, at about 31, on a first salary of 1,500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Zeki Meğamis as Şehremaneti Meclis azalığı in Istanbul. The lists have no entry for 1900 to 1906. Alongside, the lists for 1899 to 1907 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Te’cilat-ı Umumiye. The lists give Infisal for 1906/07 instead of a title.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 1,500 kuruş a month in 1899/1900, in Istanbul, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
