Life and register readings
Mehmed Nuri Efendi was born in Kilis in 1870/71 (AH 1287); the father's occupation was "Ayntab Redif Alayı kâtibi". Work began in Acre (Akka) in 1888/89, at about 18. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mehmed Nuri in Acre as İdare-i Mahsusa Akka acentesi, where the entries run to 1904/05. Alongside, the lists for 1904 to 1908 give a second post, in Aleppo as Vilâyet muhasebe kalemi memuru.
The salary went from 280 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 400 in 1899/1900, the peak, in Acre, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
