Life and register readings
The life of Selim Efendi began in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) in 1824/25 (AH 1240); the father's occupation was "Mektep muallimi". Selim began work in Didymoteicho in 1858/59, at about 34, on a first salary of 450 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Selim as a district governor (Kaymakam) in Botevgrad (Orhaniye). Next came Zlatograd (Darıdere) and Pınarbaşı (Aziziye) from 1878 to 1883. Alongside, the lists for 1882 to 1894 give a second post, in a post with no place named as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru). For 1886 to 1888 and 1889 to 1892 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1893 to 1895 give a second post, in Bodrum as Hapishane Muduru. Alongside, the lists for 1901/02 give a second post, in Istanbul as Sadaret emriyle İstanbul'a getiriliş. Five provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 1,750 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 2,000 in 1896/97, the peak, as a director (Müdür), when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 800 kuruş. Over 22 years pay ended below where it began, 800 kuruş against 1,750. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
