Life and register readings
The life of Mehmet Eşref Efendi began in Kütahya in 1862/63 (AH 1279); the father's occupation was "Kütahya Sancağı Tahrir-i Vergi memuru". Mehmet Eşref began work in 1881/82, at about 19, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, names Mehmet Eşref as Vergi kâtibi, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1883 to 1893 give a second post, in Ertugrul as Vergi kâtibi. The lists have no entry for 1893 to 1895. Next came Sandıklı in 1895/96. For 1896 to 1899 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1895 to 1903 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Mal Muduru. The lists have no entry for 1900 to 1902. Mehmet Eşref then moved to Çal and Bodrum from 1904 to 1907, with a rise to Tadilat-ı Umumiye 4. Fırka memuru in 1907/08. The last posts were in Bitlis from 1908 to 1910.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 900 in 1907/08, when three in four paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 810 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
