Life and register readings
Mahmud Galib Efendi was born in Gelibolu in 1857/58 (AH 1274); the father's occupation was "Gelibolu Bidayet Mahkemesi Azası". At about 16, in 1873/74, Mahmud Galib began work. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Mahmud Galib as Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı in Gelibolu, the birthplace. For 1874 to 1877 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Mahmud Galib to Mürefte and Keşan from 1882 to 1887, then back to Mürefte from 1887 to 1891. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1882. Mahmud Galib then moved to Eceabat, Gelibolu and Soufli (Sofulu) from 1891 to 1898. For 1894 to 1897, 1898 to 1901 and 1902 to 1906 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1906/07. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 8 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 800 in 1906/07, the peak, in Rhodes, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
