Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Karabet Efendi came from the Hristiyan community. Work began in Gemlik in 1879/80, at about 20, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1879/80, places Karabet in Gemlik as Gemlik kazası rüsûmat müdüriyeti duhan fabrikası me'mûriyeti. The annual lists then follow Karabet to İnegöl in 1881/82. Alongside, the lists for 1881 to 1883 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Mihalıç kazası âşar ve ağnam baş kitâbeti. Karabet then moved to Gemlik from 1883 to 1885. Alongside, the lists for 1884 to 1886 give a second post, in Çatalca as Çatalca emlak-ı hümâyûn şubesi müdür muavinliği. For 1886 to 1888 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1885/86 give a second post, in Hereke as Hereke Fabrika-ı hümâyûn vezne me'mûriyeti. The last entries, from 1888 to 1908, name Karabet as mezkûr fabrikanın vezne me'mûrluğu inzimamıyla muhasebe me'mûru, with no place. The lists give Infisal for 1882/83 and 1885/86; İstifa (resignation) for 1884/85 instead of a title.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 1,820 in 1907/08, the peak, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 19 years of salary come to 270,960 kuruş, 2.9 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
