Life and register readings
MUHAMMED SALİH BEG was born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1853/54 (AH 1270), into the İslam community, and the father's occupation was "Sipahi alay imamı". Work began in Kirkuk in 1866/67, at about 13. Few began so young; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with MUHAMMED SALİH BEG as mülazım (muhasebe kalemi) in Kirkuk, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1873/74. At the same time, from 1869 to 1871, the lists also place MUHAMMED SALİH BEG in Kifri (Salahiye) as tadad-ı ağnam kâtibi. MUHAMMED SALİH BEG then moved to Erbil and Kirkuk from 1874 to 1876. Alongside, the lists for 1879 to 1881 give a second post, in Kirkuk as aşar ve ağnam ikinci kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1880 to 1887 give a second post, in Sulaymaniyah as aşar baş kâtibi. Next came Kifri from 1887 to 1890. Alongside, the lists for 1896/97 give a second post, in Zakho as Mal Muduru.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 800 in 1880/81, the peak, in Sulaymaniyah, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 134,928 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
