Life and register readings
Yusuf Kenan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297); the father's occupation was "Bahriye yüzbaşısı". Work began in 1896/97, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, names Yusuf Kenan as Telgrafhane mülazımı, with no place. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1900/01 instead of a title.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 225 kuruş a month in 1896/97, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 150 kuruş. Over five years the salaries add up to 9,900 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
