Life and register readings
The life of Musa Efendi began in Medina (Medine) in 1856/57 (AH 1273); the father's occupation was "Harem-i Şerif-i Nebevî imamı; eski hükümet divanı Arapça kâtibi ve tercümanı". Musa began work in Medina in 1871/72, at about 15. From the first annual entry, for 1871/72, to 1902/03, every annual entry places Musa in the same post, Hazine-i Celîle-i Dîvâniye Tahrirat Kalemi mülâzımı, in Medina, the birthplace. Only 33 of the 1,281 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1881/82, in Medina, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less.
