Life and register readings
Mustafa Nedim Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1878 (AH 1295). Work began in 1896/97, at about 18, on a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mustafa Nedim as Vergi kalemi deftercisi and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1902 to 1904. Alongside, the lists for 1901/02 give a second post, in Ovacık as Tahrirat kâtibi. Next came Keban from 1906 to 1908. At the same time, from 1907/08, the lists also place Mustafa Nedim in a post with no place named as Ziraat Bankası sandığı muhasebe kâtibi. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1898/99 and Infisal for 1904/05.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 400 in 1907/08, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 14,328 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
