Life and register readings
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Safranbolu in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Saray-ı Cedîd Matbahı kapıcısı (mütekaid)". Work began in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 12, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. From the first annual entry, for 1871/72, to 1909/10, every annual entry places Hüseyin Hüsnü in the same post, Saray-ı Cedîd matbahı hırkacısı, in Istanbul. Only 14 of the 446 officials whose entries span 40 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 850 in 1906/07, the peak, in Istanbul, when three in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
