Life and register readings
The life of Mehmet Raşit Efendi began in Silistra (Silistre). Mehmet Raşit studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). The first salary was 250 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1877/78 (AH 1294), with Mehmet Raşit as Fırka-i tahririye mukayyidi (Nakil) in Aksaray. For 1878 to 1880 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1877/78 give a second post, in Düzce as Tahrir fırkası ikinci kâtibi. At the same time, from 1883/84, the lists also place Mehmet Raşit in Çemişgezek as Vergi kâtibi. The last entry, for 1885/86, names Mehmet Raşit as Vergi kâtibi (Nakil), with no place.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 450 kuruş a month in 1877/78, in Düzce, when half the paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 250 kuruş. In all, six years of salary come to 21,000 kuruş, 71 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1885/86.
