Life and register readings
Kostaki Kutsi Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Hristiyan community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Aleppo in 1883/84, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Kostaki Kutsi in Aleppo, the birthplace, as Telgrafhane memuru, where the entries run to 1888/89. Alongside, the lists for 1888 to 1893 give a second post, in Damascus as Telgrafhane memuru. At the same time, from 1892/93, the lists also place Kostaki Kutsi in Beirut (Beyrut) as Telgraf dış haberleşmesi memuru. Next came Nazareth in 1893/94 and İskenderun in 1895/96. The lists have no entry for 1896 to 1900. Alongside, the lists for 1895/96 give a second post, in Aleppo as Posta ve Telgraf Merkezi dış haberleşmesi memuru. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1900/01 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 600 in 1892/93, in Beirut, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
