Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1836/37 (AH 1252), Mehmed Tahir Bey came from the İslam community. Work began in 1849/50, at about 14. The first annual entry, for 1849/50, names Mehmed Tahir as umur-ı tahrîriye kalemine mülâzemet, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1850 to 1853, 1854 to 1856 and 1858 to 1861. At the same time, from 1868 to 1893, the lists also place Mehmed Tahir in Bursa as Bursa mekteb-i rüşdiyesi muallimliği (ilâveten). The lists give Infisal for 1853/54 instead of a title. Entries spanning 45 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1853/54 to 2,000 in 1870/71, the peak, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. After 36 years the salary stood below the first, 100 kuruş against 200. In all, 36 years of salary come to 368,826 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1892/93.
