Life and register readings

Born in Ortahisar (Ürgüp) in 1845/46 (AH 1262), Süleyman Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). At about 23, in 1869/70, Süleyman began work, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Süleyman as Sahil muhafız memuru and no place named. For 1888 to 1890 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1887/88 give a second post, in Akçakoca as Akçaşehir memuriyeti kâtibi. The last post was in Karacaali in 1890/91, with a rise to customs official (Rüsumat Memuru).

The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 300 in 1890/91, the peak, as Rüsumat Memuru in Karacaali, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 9,600 kuruş, 66 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1890/91.
