Life and register readings
Salih Efendi was born in Bosna. The annual lists begin in 1881/82 (AH 1299), with Salih as Âşâr üçüncü kâtibi in Skopje (Üsküp). Alongside, the lists for 1882 to 1886 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Âşâr nezareti evrak mukayyidi. Salih then moved to Mitrovica (Mitroviça) from 1886 to 1888, then a post with no place named from 1888 to 1909, with a rise to Katip in 1908/09. The lists have no entry for 1909 to 1911. The last post was in Vushtrri (Vulçıtrın) in 1911/12.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 750 in 1908/09, the peak, as Katip, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 106,260 kuruş, 77 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1911/12.
