Life and register readings
Mehmed İzzet Efendi was born in Kayabaşı in 1878/79 (AH 1296); the father was a farmer (çiftçi). At about 20, in 1899/1900, Mehmed İzzet began work, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, names Mehmed İzzet as Ebniye-i Seniyye İdaresi memuru, with no place. The lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1909/10 instead of a title.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 1,300 in 1906/07, the peak, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years the salaries add up to 109,200 kuruş, 1.9 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
