Life and register readings
Malaka Yanapulos was born in Mytilene (Midilli) in 1842/43 (AH 1258). At about 20, in 1862/63, Malaka Yanapulos began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, names Malaka Yanapulos as Telgrafhane hizmeti, with no place. Malaka Yanapulos then moved to Beykoz from 1871 to 1877, then a post with no place named from 1878 to 1896. For 1877 to 1878 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1888/89 give a second post, in Istanbul as İzin. The lists give Infisal for 1869/70, İstifa (resignation) for 1876/77, Azil (dismissal) for 1895/96 and Mazuliyet for 1896/97 instead of a title.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 3,000 in 1888/89, the peak, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 21 years the salaries add up to 459,600 kuruş, 4.4 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more.
