Life and register readings
Mehmed Salih Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1857/58 (AH 1274). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). Work began in 1879/80, at about 22, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1879/80, names Mehmed Salih as İkinci daire emlak tahsildarı, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1890 to 1898. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1889/90 and Vefat (death) for 1900/01.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 1,100 in 1889/90, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 650 kuruş. In all, 11 years of salary come to 87,000 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
