Life and register readings
Mehmed Halid Efendi was born in Mecca (Mekke) in 1844/45 (AH 1260); the father's occupation was "Nakşibendi şeyhi". At about 29, in 1873/74, Mehmed Halid began work. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, names Mehmed Halid in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), with no place, with a rise to Evrak Odası mukayyidi in 1880/81.
The salary went from 52 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 275 in 1883/84, the peak, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 13,320 kuruş, 33 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1883/84.
