Life and register readings
The life of Mehmet Halit Efendi began in Kars. The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). The annual lists begin in 1865/66 (AH 1282), with Mehmet Halit as Mülazım (Mektûbî Kalemi) (Görevin sona ermesi) in Erzurum, where the entries run to 1867/68. Alongside, the lists for 1867 to 1899 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Tahrirat Müdürü. The lists have no entry for 1874 to 1876 and 1878 to 1892. At the same time, from 1898 to 1904, the lists also place Mehmet Halit in Kemaliye (Eğin) as a district governor (Kaymakam). Alongside, the lists for 1903 to 1905 give a second post, in Harput as Kaymakam. For 1905 to 1907 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Siran from 1907 to 1910. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 46 years or more.
