Life and register readings
MUHAMMED SIDIK EFENDİ was born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1868/69 (AH 1285); the father's occupation was "Tadad-ı ağnam memuru". Work began in Kirkuk in 1878/79, at about 11, on a first salary of 144 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with MUHAMMED SIDIK as a candidate official (Mülazım) and no place named. Alongside, the lists for 1880 to 1884 give a second post, in Koy Sanjaq as bidayet mahkemesi ikinci kâtibi. At the same time, from 1883 to 1889, the lists also place MUHAMMED SIDIK in Kirkuk as tahrirat kalemi Arabî kâtibi. The annual lists then follow MUHAMMED SIDIK to Asir from 1890 to 1892. Alongside, the lists for 1891/92 give a second post, in Al Hudaydah as tahrirat müdürü. MUHAMMED SIDIK then moved to Necid from 1895 to 1898. Alongside, the lists for 1897 to 1905 give a second post, in a post with no place named as tahrirat müdürü.
The salary went from 144 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 1,750 in 1891/92, the peak, in Al Hudaydah, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
