Life and register readings
Serop Efendi was born in Bilecik in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Katolik Hristiyan community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). The schooling was at a community school (Millet Mektebi).
Work began in Bilecik in 1885/86, at about 21, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Serop in Bilecik, the birthplace, as Yol masrafları görevlisi. Alongside, the lists for 1886 to 1903 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Telgraf ve posta merkezi görevlisi. At the same time, from 1902/03, the lists also place Serop in Bilecik as Telgraf ve posta merkezi nakliye memuru.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1885/86, in Bilecik, when one in five paid officials earned less. After 18 years the salary stood below the first, 150 kuruş against 250. In all, 18 years of salary come to 32,772 kuruş, 37 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
