Life and register readings
Mehmed Neşet Efendi was born in Gülencik in 1875/76 (AH 1292); the father's occupation was "Basra Düyun-ı Umumiye müdürü". At about 13, in 1887/88, Mehmed Neşet began work in Baghdad (Bağdat), on a first salary of 100 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Mehmed Neşet in Baghdad as Birinci Daire-i Belediye Hastahanesi görevlisi, where the entries run to 1889/90. The last posts were in Amarah (Amare) from 1891 to 1894. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1889/90.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 200 in 1891/92, in Amarah, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 10,500 kuruş, 36 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
