Life and register readings
Süleyman Nayab Efendi was born in Bursa in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the İslam community. Work began in Bursa in 1860/61, at about 17. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places Süleyman Nayab in Bursa, the birthplace, as Bursa tahrirat kalemi; mülâzemet, where the entries run to 1862/63. Alongside, the lists for 1862 to 1880 give a second post, in a post with no place named as muhâsebe kalemi maşat kitâbeti refakati. The lists have no entry for 1880 to 1882. At the same time, from 1878 to 1880, the lists also place Süleyman Nayab in İnegöl as İnegöl ... ser tahsildarlığı. The annual lists then follow Süleyman Nayab to Gemlik, Pazarcık and Bigadiç from 1884 to 1902. The last entries, from 1903 to 1909, name Süleyman Nayab as Sanduklı kazası kai’makamlığı, with no place. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1863/64, 1865/66 and 1879/80; Azil (dismissal) for 1891/92. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 2 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 50 years or more.
Pay rose from 75 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to a peak of 1,206 in 1893/94, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 240,846 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
