Life and register readings
Kostaki Petropolo was born in Istanbul in 1837/38 (AH 1253), into the Hristiyan community, and the father's occupation was "Divan-ı Hümayun tercümanı". Work began in Pazar (Atina) in 1854/55, at about 17. The annual lists begin in 1854/55, with Kostaki Petropolo as Atina Sefareti mülazım mübeyyizi in Pazar, where the entries run to 1856/57. For 1857 to 1860 the lists have no entry. Kostaki Petropolo then moved back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1860 to 1863, then a post with no place named from 1863 to 1902. The lists have no entry for 1864 to 1893. Alongside, the lists for 1901/02 give a second post, in Podgorica as Podgorica şehbenderi. The lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1899/1900 instead of a title. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 2 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 49 years or more.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to a peak of 1,100 in 1901/02, in Podgorica, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 123,600 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
