Life and register readings
Born in Kilis in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Ohannes Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). At about 18, in 1880/81, Ohannes began work in Aleppo (Halep), on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Ohannes as Belediye kâtibi in Aleppo, where the entries run to 1892/93. Alongside, the lists for 1883/84 give a second post, in Kilis as Belediye başkâtibi. Ohannes then moved to Jisr al-Shughur in 1892/93. The last posts were in İskenderun from 1893 to 1897.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 750 in 1893/94, the peak, in İskenderun, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
