Life and register readings
Born in Balıkesir in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Miloyan Melkon Efendi came from the Hristiyan community. Work began in 1880/81, at about 14. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, names Miloyan Melkon as Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı, with no place. Next came Bandırma in 1883/84. The lists have no entry for 1884 to 1891. From 1891 to 1910 the annual entries place Miloyan Melkon in Istanbul. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1909/10.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 2,125 in 1907/08, the peak, in Istanbul, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less.
