Life and register readings
Mahmud Efendi was born in Harput in 1868/69 (AH 1285). The schooling was at Medrese, the Islamic college. At about 15, in 1882/83, Mahmud began work in Menemen, on a first salary of 225 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Mahmud in Menemen as Beşinci kol dairesi aşar kol muharriri. The lists have no entry for 1883 to 1887. Alongside, the lists for 1888 to 1896 give a second post, in Menemen as Geçici iskân kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1895 to 1902 give a second post, in Bozdoğan as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru).
