Life and register readings
İskender Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1868/69 (AH 1285), into the Marunî Hristiyan community. Work began in Aleppo in 1880/81, at about 13. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 5 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with İskender as Halep Vilayeti Muhasebe Kalemi görevlisi in Aleppo, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1891/92. The lists have no entry for 1881 to 1886. At the same time, from 1891 to 1895, the lists also place İskender in Antakya as Sandık Emini. Alongside, the lists for 1894/95 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Görevin sona ermesi. The last posts were in Antakya in 1896/97 and Kilis in 1901/02.
