Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Sabri Efendi began in Mecca (Mekke) in 1878/79 (AH 1296); the father's occupation was "Hicaz Kalesi topçu imamı". Work began in Mecca in 1893/94, at about 15. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Mehmed Sabri as Telgraf Merkezi muhabere memurluğu refakatinde mülazemet in Mecca, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1896/97. Alongside, the lists for 1896 to 1900 give a second post, in Yanbu as Posta şubesi memuru. At the same time, from 1899 to 1901, the lists also place Mehmed Sabri in Jeddah (Cidde) as Telgraf ve Posta Merkezi muhabere memuru. For 1901 to 1904 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Mudanya from 1904 to 1906. Mudanya, about 2,350 km from Mecca, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 500 in 1896/97, in Yanbu, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
