Life and register readings
Born in Sivas in 1824/25 (AH 1240), Mustafa İzzet Efendi was the child of a cavalryman holding a fief (sipahi). Mustafa İzzet began work in 1851/52, at about 27, on a first salary of 140 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1851/52, names Mustafa İzzet as Muhasebe refakati, with no place. For 1853 to 1855, 1857 to 1861, 1874 to 1879 and 1882 to 1885 the lists have no entry.
The salary went from 1,500 kuruş a month in 1851/52 to 2,500 in 1873/74, the peak, as Muhasebeci, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 1,700 kuruş. Over 12 years pay ended where it began, at 1,500 kuruş. In all, 12 years of salary come to 210,300 kuruş, 3.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1886/87.
