Life and register readings
Mehmed Kâmil Efendi was born in Başpeykâr in 1842/43 (AH 1258); the father's occupation was "Saray-ı Hümayun hademesi". The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Sarayi humayun in 1862/63, at about 20, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, places Mehmed Kâmil in Sarayi humayun as Saray-ı Hümayun bekçi hademesi, where the entries run to 1876/77. The lists have no entry for 1877 to 1879. At the same time, from 1876 to 1886, the lists also place Mehmed Kâmil in a post with no place named as Mabeyn-i Hümayun hademesi. Alongside, the lists for 1885 to 1900 give a second post, in Sarayi humayun as İbrikdâr-ı hazret-i şehriyarî. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1885/86.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to a peak of 2,400 in 1899/1900, in Sarayi humayun, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 36 years of salary come to 221,040 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
