Life and register readings
Mihalaki Aklos Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1836/37 (AH 1252). At about 18, in 1854/55, Mihalaki Aklos began work in Rhodes (Rodos), on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1854/55, places Mihalaki Aklos in Rhodes as Karantinahane tercümanı, where the entries run to 1857/58. For 1858 to 1868 the lists have no entry. The last entries, from 1868 to 1889, name Mihalaki Aklos as Şehbender, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1884 to 1886. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1857/58 and 1883/84.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1854/55 to a peak of 4,000 in 1875/76, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less.
