Life and register readings
Mehmed Ağa was born in Harput in 1846/47 (AH 1263). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). At about 14, in 1860/61, Mehmed began work in Istanbul. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places Mehmed in Istanbul as Emtia Gümrüğü mülazımı, where the entries run to 1877/78. The last entries, from 1878 to 1880, name Mehmed as Mütehakkan memuru, with no place.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to a peak of 500 in 1878, when 54 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 60,720 kuruş, 65 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1879/80.
