Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1878 (AH 1295), Mehmed Şakir Efendi came from the İslam community. Work began in 1898/99, at about 20, on a first salary of 700 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1898/99, names Mehmed Şakir as ceyb-i hümâyun mütercimliği, with no place. For 1903 to 1907 the lists have no entry. The lists give Aciga Cikarildi for 1908/09 instead of a title.
The salary went from 700 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 2,000 in 1907/08, the peak, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. Over seven years the salaries add up to 85,200 kuruş, 2.5 times what an official on the median salary earned.
