Life and register readings

Born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1868/69 (AH 1285), MUHAMMED ŞEFİK EFENDİ was the child of a merchant (tüccar). MUHAMMED ŞEFİK began work in 1881/82, at about 14, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, names MUHAMMED ŞEFİK as Tahrirat kalemi mülazımı, with no place. For 1885 to 1889 the lists have no entry. Next came Basra from 1891 to 1893, then a return to Kirkuk, the birthplace, from 1894 to 1899. MUHAMMED ŞEFİK then moved to Hicaz Demiryolu from 1904 to 1909. The lists have no entry for 1900 to 1904 and 1906 to 1908. The last entry, for 1909/10, names MUHAMMED ŞEFİK as Hicaz Demiryolu muhasebe kalemi ikinci sınıf kâtibi, with no place. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1893/94 and Azil (dismissal) for 1899/1900.

The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 800 in 1909/10, the peak, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
