Life and register readings
Katan Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1834/35 (AH 1250); the father's occupation was "İbrahim Paşa’nın İstanbul ticaret vekâletinde görevli". Work began in Istanbul in 1852/53, at about 18. The first annual entry, for 1852/53, places Katan in Istanbul as Tahrirat-ı Hariciye Kalemi mülazımı. Alongside, the lists for 1852/53 give a second post, in Gelibolu as Gelibolu’ya gönderilen komisyonun tercümanı. Next came Varna in 1856/57. At the same time, from 1856/57, the lists also place Katan in Istanbul as Tahrirat-ı Hariciye Kalemi görevlisi. The annual lists then follow Katan to Istanbul from 1864 to 1867. Alongside, the lists for 1865/66 give a second post, in Misir as Süveyş Kanalı komiseri Server Paşa maiyetinde görevli. Katan then moved to Ioannina (Yanya) from 1867 to 1871. Alongside, the lists for 1870 to 1874 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Tuna Vilayeti Umur-ı Ecnebiye müdürü. Alongside, the lists for 1873 to 1883 give a second post, in Istanbul as Bâb-ı Seraskerî Tahrirat-ı Ecnebiye müdürü.
Pay rose from 1,750 kuruş a month in 1852/53 to a peak of 7,500 in 1867/68, in Ioannina, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 930,600 kuruş, 9 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1882/83.
